What is phlebectomy?

Phlebectomy is a minimally invasive operation using a small scalpel or needle to remove unwanted varicose veins. Under local anesthesia, the unwanted vein is removed permanently, and no stitches are required afterward. The procedure is usually performed on the legs, but it can also remove varicose veins in other parts of the body. One of the advantages of phlebectomy is that it doesn't require a large incision or general anesthesia. This makes the recovery time shorter and less painful than traditional vein-stripping surgery.

Are painful, unsightly veins getting you down?

Phlebectomy is typically recommended for individuals who have varicose veins that are causing discomfort or affecting their quality of life. During your free consultation with Dr. Gharai, she will determine if phlebectomy is the ideal treatment for you. She may sometimes recommend other treatments, such as sclerotherapy or laser vein removal. Dr. Gharai can help you understand the benefits and risks of each option and suggest a course of action personalized to your unique needs and goals.

Say goodbye to uncomfortable varicose veins.

Phlebectomy surgically removes varicose veins from the legs using a minimally invasive technique. The procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia and involves making small incisions in the skin through which the varicose veins are removed. Because the incisions tend to be less than 1/4 inch in size, they do not require stitches. After the veins are removed, the incisions are covered with a bandage or compression dressing. You can expect your procedure to take less than an hour to complete, and you can return to your everyday activities within a few days. Phlebectomy is a safe and effective treatment option for varicose veins, with a low risk of complications.

Phlebectomy FAQs

How long does a phlebectomy procedure typically take?

Will phlebectomy permanently remove the treated veins?

Can phlebectomy be performed on both legs during the same visit?

When can I return to work after a phlebectomy procedure?

Will I need additional vein treatments after phlebectomy?

How long does a phlebectomy procedure typically take?

A phlebectomy is relatively quick. In most cases, treatment is completed in 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the number of veins being removed and the complexity of your individual case. Because phlebectomy is performed using local anesthesia and very small incisions, there is no need for extended preparation or recovery time at the facility. You can usually go home shortly after the procedure is finished. During your consultation, Dr. Gharai will explain what to expect based on your treatment plan and how many veins are being addressed.

Will phlebectomy permanently remove the treated veins?

Yes. Phlebectomy permanently removes the specific varicose veins that are treated. Once a vein is removed, it does not grow back. However, phlebectomy does not prevent new varicose veins from developing in the future. Vein disease is often progressive, which means additional veins may become enlarged over time. Maintaining healthy habits, wearing compression stockings when recommended, and attending follow-up visits can help support long-term vein health and monitor for any new concerns.

Can phlebectomy be performed on both legs during the same visit?

In many cases, phlebectomy can be performed on both legs in one appointment, provided it is medically appropriate and safe for you. Treating both legs at once can be convenient and may reduce the total number of visits needed. The decision depends on the extent of vein disease, the number of veins, and your health. Dr. Gharai will evaluate your circulation and recommend the safest approach.

When can I return to work after a phlebectomy procedure?

Most patients are able to return to work within one to three days following phlebectomy. Some people feel comfortable resuming desk work or light duties as soon as the next day. Jobs that involve prolonged standing, heavy lifting, or strenuous physical activity may require a slightly longer recovery period. You will receive personalized instructions on activity restrictions, compression stocking use, and when to gradually resume normal routines.

Will I need additional vein treatments after phlebectomy?

Some patients achieve excellent results with phlebectomy alone, while others may benefit from additional vein treatments. Depending on your vein anatomy and symptoms, treatments such as endovenous ablation or sclerotherapy may be recommended to address underlying vein reflux or smaller spider veins. Dr. Gharai will discuss your vein treatment options and create a personalized treatment strategy to achieve the best functional and cosmetic outcomes.
