Why We Offer Pro-Nox™

Even minimally invasive procedures can cause anxiety. Nervousness can heighten sensitivity to discomfort and make treatment feel more stressful than necessary.

Pro-Nox™ allows you to:

  • Remain awake and responsive
  • Control your own comfort
  • Experience rapid relief within seconds
  • Recover within minutes
  • Drive yourself to and from your appointment

Under guidelines established by the American Society of Anesthesiologists, nitrous oxide delivered in this manner is classified as “minimal sedation” (analgesia) — not deep sedation or general anesthesia. Because nitrous oxide is eliminated through normal breathing, there are no lingering sedative effects.

How Pro-Nox™ Works

The system automatically blends a precise 50/50 mix of oxygen and nitrous oxide.

1. You hold your own mouthpiece or mask.
2. When discomfort begins, inhale.
3. Relief typically occurs within seconds.
4. When comfortable, remove the mouthpiece.
5. Effects wear off within minutes after stopping.

What does it feel like?

Most patients describe a sense of calm, reduced anxiety, and less awareness of discomfort during treatment. Some may experience mild lightheadedness. If mild nausea occurs, simply remove the mask and take several normal breaths — symptoms resolve quickly.

Is Pro-Nox™ safe?

Yes. It is a patient-controlled system delivering a fixed 50/50 blend of oxygen and nitrous oxide. Because you control each inhalation, the system enhances safety while maintaining effectiveness.

Who is a good candidate?

Pro-Nox™ is a great option for patients who feel anxious about vein or aesthetic treatments, are sensitive to discomfort, or are undergoing longer procedures. It’s ideal for those who want fast-acting relief without IV sedation and prefer to drive themselves home afterward.

Who should not use Pro-Nox™?

Your provider will determine whether Pro-Nox™ is appropriate for you. It may not be recommended for patients who are pregnant, have certain respiratory conditions (such as severe COPD), have a vitamin B12 deficiency, or have certain middle ear conditions. A medical screening is always performed before use.

Is this the same as “laughing gas” used at the dentist?

Yes. It uses the same nitrous oxide commonly used in dental procedures but is delivered through a patient-controlled, on-demand system.

Do I have to use it during the entire procedure?

No. You inhale only when you feel discomfort. You remain in full control at all times.

Can I move around during treatment?

Yes. You remain fully awake and mobile.

Do I need to prepare beforehand?

No special preparation is required.

Can I drive myself home?

Yes. The effects wear off within minutes after stopping inhalation, allowing you to safely drive yourself home.

Is Pro-Nox™ commonly used?

Pro-Nox™ is trusted by over 9,000 medical practices across the United States and Canada and has been used by more than 4 million patients.

How much does it cost?

Each Pro-Nox™ treatment requires a new, single-use disposable breathing circuit for patient safety, along with medical-grade oxygen and nitrous oxide. It is included with all CO2 laser treatments as part of the cost and is a $60 add-on for other procedures. Patients are responsible for payment on the date of service.

Is this covered by insurance?

According to guidelines established by the American Society of Anesthesiologists, this method of nitrous oxide delivery qualifies as minimal sedation. Medicare and most insurance providers classify it as a non-covered comfort service. Because it is not medically necessary anesthesia, it is not covered by insurance.
